EO Charging | Mini Pro 3

Electric vehicle charger
Launched 2020

EO Charging has one central mission: to create reliable, straightforward charging solutions for everyday electric vehicle (EV) charging, as a fundamental part of the journey towards a green economy. Founded in 2015, EO were named the fastest-growing business in the EV sector by the Financial Times in its 2021 FT1000 list of Europe’s fastest-growing companies.

GMStudio has been working with EO since 2019, leading the industrial design and development of their next generation products. The Mini Pro 3 home EV charger was the first of the new products to launch.

Designed to be the most discreet charger on the market, the enclosure has a footprint the same size as an A5 sheet of paper, whilst still offering a punchy 22kW charging capacity.

The modular design comes with or without a hardwired charging cable, and also features a removable fascia which can be rebranded for strategic partnerships with energy suppliers.

Key features:

  • We meticulously designed and engineered a super-compact enclosure which is robust, water-tight and operates at a safe temperature.

The outcome is the market's most compact EV charger, designed to fit discreetly into any domestic setting.

  • The design incorporates a removable front fascia, serving a dual purpose: concealing unsightly fixtures and enabling strategic co-branding collaborations with partners like Hive.

Additionally, the interchangeable fascia simplifies stock and SKU management of the modular design variants.

  • EO needed to offer a number of different product variants and installation options, to cater for different international markets.

We developed a single set of tools capable of accommodating all the different variants, thereby reducing tooling costs, streamlining production processes, and minimising stock overheads.

  • 'It's safe to say that the output of this project transformed our business and moved us from a category laggard to a category leader.'

What we did:

  • Deep-dive into the business requirements and aspirations of EO's new range of products, resulting in detailed product design specification and a step-by-step roadmap for the project.

  • Workshops with key stakeholders to uncover different perspectives on the mission and personality of the brand. We then bought these together into a single, unified set of brand values.

  • Looking at the entire product journey from manufacture, stock keeping, installation and end-use, we designed a set of unique features which come together to deliver a thoughtful, simplified, and high-quality experience not seen elsewhere in the category.

  • Physical expression of the brand strategy, innovative steps and engineering requirements identified in the prior phases. The result is a distinct design that makes use of surface texture to elevate the perceived quality of the product.

  • We worked closely with EO’s hardware, production, and manufacturing teams to engineer a product that meets rigorous specifications, complies with safety standards and is optimised for efficient manufacture, assembly, and installation.

  • We produced all the images used for the product launch, promotion, product packaging and ecommerce - as showcased on this page. These were delivered months in advance of launch, to enable the brand to work on marketing and sales before having physical product in-hand.
