Relish’s mission is to improve wellbeing in people living with dementia.

GMStudio has been working closely with the brand since 2019, guiding them through the process of growing their business by expanding into new categories. The work has taken them into the world of consumer electronics, where they are now the leading dementia brand.

The Relish DAB & Music Player is the direct outcome of insights gathered from workshops and interviews we conducted with people living with dementia. We learned first-hand how important music is to so many people’s wellbeing, and how their ever-changing condition can stop them from using products that were once so easily accessible to them.

The result is a familiar but contemporary design, with every detail carefully crafted to enable and empower people living with dementia to access music, and the memories they attach to it.

  • Pre-save three favourite DAB or FM radio stations to the memory buttons on the top panel.

    Play your personalised MP3 playlist by pressing the fourth ‘My Playlist’ button.

  • The setup interface and USB flash drive are discreetly hidden behind the battery door at the rear of the product.

    This keeps them out of sight, averting distractions and preventing accidental retuning of the memory buttons.

What we did:

  • Deep-dive into the relationship between dementia, music and the accessibility of ‘mainstream’ audio products. A wealth of insights were gathered from interviews and focus groups with people living with dementia in supported living homes across the UK.

  • We delivered a clear strategy on how the values of the brand should be expressed through physical product design. The result was a contemporary but universally appealing design language, which is premium, aspirational and avoids the ‘retro’ styling tropes of the competition.

  • Our strategy was to lead the market through appropriate innovation. The result was a carefully crafted interface with two ‘zones’; one for initial setup (to be used by the care-giver), and a second for daily use (by the person with dementia).

  • Huge attention was paid to every single aspect of the design, from ergonomics and ease of use through to aesthetic form, proportion, fit and finish. The outcome is the most premium looking product in the dementia-radio category, delivered at a competitive and affordable price.

  • We identified five expert Hong Kong / Chinese radio manufacturers of appropriate size and capability for our client. Following a full audit of each, and rounds of quotations and price negotiations, we awarded the business to the best-fit supplier.

    Excellent unit prices, tooling prices and terms were achieved on behalf of our client, resulting in a high-margin product that delivers significant return on investment for the company.

  • We worked closely with the OEM supplier to achieve a first-rate user experience and audio quality.

    Particular care and attention was given to the custom volume dial, which was engineered in-house, and then developed collaboratively for production.

  • We took full ownership of the product design, development and manufacturing schedule on behalf of our client. The product was delivered on-time and with quality, in spite of the challenges caused by the global Covid 19 pandemic.

  • We produced all the images used for the product launch, promotion, product packaging and ecommerce - as showcased on this page. These were delivered months in advance of launch, to enable the brand to work on marketing and sales before having physical product in-hand.
