Joseph Joseph | Split Steel

Bathroom recycling bin
Launched 2018

80% of bathroom waste is recyclable, but less than 40% is actually recycled on average.

Spit Steel is the premium pedal-operated version of Split, the first bathroom bin available on the market that enabled people to easily separate their general waste from their recyclable waste.

Designed and developed by Geoff Marsh whilst employed by Joseph Joseph, Split Steel launched as part of the second collection of bathroom products - all of which used steel as a way to elevate the perceived quality of the designs. Particular care and attention were paid to the ‘butterfly’ lids, which required the development of a two-way dampener to manage the open / close movement.

The product continues to sell well to this day, with excellent reviews across Amazon and other key retail channels.

Mechanism engineered in collaboration with Chambers Design Studio Ltd.
Geoff was employed by Joseph Joseph from October 2015 to October 2018.

Key features:

  • Split compartments allow you to separate recyclable and non-recyclable bathroom waste, making recycling easy.

  • The lids were developed to open and close in a smooth, controlled manner - no matter how hard the foot pedal was pressed.

  • The internal compartments are made from 100% recycled polypropylene.

Designed to fit a 3 litre bin liner, they’re easy to empty and clean.
